What is text marketing?
Text marketing is also known as SMS marketing. SMS is an acronym for short message service. SMS messages are most commonly referred to as text messages.
How long can a text message be?
Text messages in the U.S. are typically limited to 160 characters, with spaces.
What is a short code?
A short code is basically a short telephone number (usually 5 or 6 digits in length) exclusively used to deliver text messages. The idea behind short codes is to allow them to be quickly memorized by prospects.
What is a promo code?
Promo codes allow prospects to interact with your promotions. They are often codes in alpha-numeric format that prospects send via text to your short code in order to receive an automated text message back from you.
What is a keyword?
Keywords are simply “vanity” promo codes. So, instead of an alpha-numeric code, prospects would send the word you specified in your promotion. For example, your marketing piece could read “Text DISCOUNT to 12345 to get 15% off today’s purchase.” Keywords tend to be easier for prospects to remember when used in media like TV and radio ads.
Can I have whatever keyword I want?
Just as it is with real estate and domain names, there is also a limited supply of keywords. So as long as it’s hasn’t been taken yet, you’re free to use it. However, it is not possible to just “sit on” a keyword without utilizing it. You run the risk of having your keyword taken away if it goes unused over a 30 day period.
